The Ui ( Russian Уй ; Kazakh Үй ) is a 462 km long left tributary of the Tobol east of the Urals , in the southwest of the West Siberian lowlands in Russia and along its border with Kazakhstan .
It should not be confused with the right tributary of the same name, the Ui of the Irtysh , also in Western Siberia.
course
The Ui rises about 700 m above sea level on the eastern flank of the 1000 m high Southern Urals, about 50 kilometers southwest of the city of Miass . The source and the upper reaches of the river are in the Republic of Bashkortostan . First, the Ui flows in a south-easterly direction over the transural plateau (Sauralskoje plato), reaches the Chelyabinsk Oblast and then turns to the east. From the city of Troitsk , the river forms the border between Russia and Kazakhstan over large sections , and for the last 50 kilometers before it flows into the Tobol near the village of Ust-Uiskoje, the border between the Russian Kurgan Oblast and Kazakhstan.
Hydrography
The catchment area of the Ui covers 34,400 km². The mean monthly water flow in the village of Krutojarski, about 60 kilometers above the estuary, is 13.5 m³ / s (minimum in February 1.7 m³ / s, maximum during the snowmelt in April 61 m³ / s).
The largest tributary is the Uwelka , which flows into the Ui from the left at Troizk. Above the last kilometers before the mouth, on which the river widens, it is about 30 meters wide and two meters deep; its flow velocity here is 0.4 m / s.
The Ui freezes between November and April.
Economy and Infrastructure
The Ui is not navigable. In its course there are three smaller dams that are used for drinking water supply and irrigation. The largest dam is the Troitsk dam with an area of 10.8 km², which u. a. serves as a cooling water reservoir for the Troitsk thermal power station.
In the upper reaches of the Ui is crossed by the railway line Miass - Uchaly , in Troitsk by the main line Chelyabinsk - Orsk or - Qostanai (Kazakhstan). In Troitsk, the M36 trunk road from Yekaterinburg via Chelyabinsk to the Kazakh border also crosses the river.
For most of its course, the Ui is accompanied by regional and local roads.
