Uchaly ( Bashkir and Russian Учалы́ ) is a city in the Republic of Bashkortostan ( Russia ) with 37,788 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located on the eastern flank of the Southern Urals , about 450 km southeast of the republic capital Ufa .
Utschaly is administratively directly subordinate to the Oblast and at the same time the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
history
In 1939, copper and zinc ore deposits were discovered in the area of what is today the city , and mining began in 1955. The resulting miners' settlements Malyje Uschaly ( Малые Учалы , Klein-Uschaly; also Malo-Uschalinski / Мало-Учалинский ) and Novyje Uschaly ( Новые Учалы , Neu-Uschaly) were united to the city of Uchaly in 1963.
