Oktjabrski ( Russian Октя́брьский ) is an independent city with 109,474 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the autonomous republic of Bashkortostan in Russia .

geography

The city is located on the right bank of the right Kama tributary Ik, around 160 km west of the republic capital Ufa on the M 5 trunk road . In terms of population, Oktyabrsky is the fifth largest city in Bashkortostan. Immediately to the west of the city is the subject boundary between Bashkortostan and the Republic of Tatarstan . The nearest town, Bawly , 17 km southwest , is also in Tatarstan.

history

Oktjabrski was founded as a settlement in 1937 in order to develop one of the local oil and gas deposits. In 1942 the place got its current name - literally "October City" - on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the October Revolution . In 1946 Oktjabrski received town charter. When oil production declined in the 1950s, the city's economy shifted to producing consumer goods.

Economy and Transport

Today Oktjabrski is both a center of oil production and an industrial city. The most important local businesses include a branch of the Baschneft raw materials company , a factory for oil production systems, as well as mechanical engineering, building materials and auto parts industries, a power line technology factory and a ceramics factory. A research institute for oil production is also located in the city.
