Old German Synagogue (Warsaw)

The Old German Synagogue was the synagogue of German-speaking Warsaw Jews and the first synagogue in Warsaw where services were held in German instead of Hebrew .

history

During the time of the Duchy of Warsaw under Napoleon, the Jewish community flourished in Warsaw, particularly with the settlement of German Jews. Maskilim or representatives of the Haskala, led by Isaak Flatau , formed their own synagogue, the so-called German Synagogue, which was built in 1802 on Daniłowiczowska Street and replaced in 1849 by a New German Synagogue .
