German Synagogue (Warsaw)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Synagogue of Warsaw was the synagogue of the German-speaking Warsaw Jews and the only synagogue in Warsaw where services were held in German instead of Hebrew. This synagogue, which was built in 1849, replaced the old German synagogue from 1802.

history

During the time of the Duchy of Warsaw under Napoleon, the Jewish community in Warsaw flourished, particularly with the settlement of German Jews, and a synagogue was built on Daniłowicz Street in 1802 . This was demolished in 1849 when a new building was built on the same site according to plans by Alfons Kropiwnicki and Jakub Centnerschwer .

The building was the synagogue of the German-speaking part of the Warsaw Jewish community. The synagogue was demolished in 1878 for the construction of the large synagogue , although this new building was designed in the same place based on the model of the Berlin synagogue on Oranienburger Strasse.
