The 606 km long Isset ( Russian Исеть , fem. , Also Iset ) is a left tributary of the Tobol (river system of the Ob ) in the Ural hinterland and in the West Siberian lowlands ( Russia , Asia ).

The Isset has its origin in the (partially dammed) Lake Isset (Исетское озеро / Issetskoje osero) near Sredneuralsk northwest of Yekaterinburg on the eastern flank of the Urals at 250  m above sea level. NN . In its upper reaches in and around Yekaterinburg it flows through several "ponds" that were dammed up for mining purposes as early as the 18th century. B. the Verkh-Issetsky pond (Верх-Исетский пруд / Upper Isset pond) and small reservoirs. In places it forms rapids. To increase the water supply from the Isset and improving the water supply Ekaterinburg was from the Woltschicha dam (Волчихинское водохранилище / Woltschichinskoje wodochranilischtsche, the so-called Swerdlowsk or Yekaterinburg sea ) at the flow system of Volga belonging Chusovaya a 6 km long channel to the upper Isset- Pond dug into the river Reshotka (Решётка). This - non-navigable - channel thus crosses the continental divide between the Caspian Sea and the Arctic Ocean . The Isset continues to flow in an easterly direction in a wide valley through the West Siberian lowlands and finally flows into the Tobol ( 51  m above sea level ) 5 km south of Yalutorovsk .

The catchment area of the Isset covers 58,900 km². At the village of Issetskoye (Исетское), 105 km from the mouth, the mean water flow is 73.1 m³ / s. In the lower reaches the river is about 50 m wide and 2 m deep, the flow velocity is 0.4 m / s. The main tributaries are the Miass , Tetscha and Sinara .

The river flows through the Sverdlovsk Oblast with the cities of Yekaterinburg, Aramil and Kamensk-Uralsky , the Kurgan Oblast with Kataisk , Dalmatowo and Schadrinsk and the Tyumen Oblast . Since the river flows through heavily industrial cities in the upper and middle reaches to Schadrinsk, it has to struggle with pollution. The Yekaterinburg – Kurgan railway and the road in the wide Isset valley run in this section .

The Isset freezes from November to April. In principle, it is navigable for smaller ships from Schadrinsk, but is not an official waterway today , as it meanders heavily in the lower reaches .
