history
Kataisk was created in 1655 at the mouth of the Kataika River as Kataiski Ostrog (Катайский острог). The name is derived from the name of the Bashkir tribe Katai. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the most important trade route to Siberia led through the town. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was an important grain trading center. In October 1913, a branch line of the Trans-Siberian Railway from Bogdanowitsch via Kamensk-Uralsky (station Sinarskaya, the then Kamensk or Kamensky Sawod) to Schadrinsk was led through the place. This line was later expanded to become a direct Trans-Siberian cross-connection between Yekaterinburg and Kurgan, which was opened in 1933. In 1944 the place received city rights.
