Kurtamysch ( Russian Куртамыш ) is a city in the Kurgan Oblast ( Russia ) with 17,099 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located east of the Urals , in the southwest of the West Siberian lowlands , about 80 km southwest of the Oblast capital Kurgan on Kurtamysch , a left tributary of the Tobol . The climate is continental.

The city is the administrative center of the Kurtamysh Rajons Kurtamyschski .

history

Kurtamysch was built in 1745 as a fortified settlement on the river of the same name. In 1762 the place was already mentioned as Kurtamyschskaja sloboda (Куртамышская слобода; sloboda denotes a trading settlement ). The name probably has its origin in a Turkic personal name. In 1956 the place received city rights.

Culture, education and sights

In Kurtamysh there is a local history museum named after Nikolai Tomin (1886–1924), a commander of the Red Army who was born nearby during the Russian Civil War .

economy

There are construction industries as well as light and food industries in the village. Agriculture (especially wheat, sheep, cattle) is practiced in the area.
