Ernest Sands

Ernest M. Sands (born April 30, 1922 in Alberta , Canada , †  April 9, 2012 in Minot , North Dakota ) was an American politician . Between 1981 and 1985 he was Lieutenant Governor of the state of North Dakota.

Career

Ernest Sands was born in 1922 in the Canadian province of Alberta to American parents. Since 1930 his family lived in Minot, where he attended public schools including high school. He also graduated from the local Minot State Teachers College , now Minot State University . Then he studied economics at the University of North Dakota . During the Second World War he served in the Air Corps of the United States Army . His plane was shot down in an air raid on Cologne in October 1944. He jumped off with the parachute and was able to make his way into southern Germany before he was captured there. In late April 1945 he was liberated by troops under the command of General George S. Patton .

After the war, he graduated from the University of North Dakota. Then he moved to Velva , where he worked in various industries. Among other things, he ran a funeral home, hardware store and furniture store. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1960 he became a member of the local council and in 1962 mayor of Velva. He served in the North Dakota Senate between 1966 and 1980, with a brief hiatus between 1971 and 1972 . In 1980 Sands was elected lieutenant governor of North Dakota alongside Allen I. Olson . He held this office between 1981 and 1985. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. Sands was a member of numerous organizations and associations. He died in Minot on April 9, 2012.
