Raphael "Ray" Schnell (born May 1, 1893 in Richardton , Stark County , North Dakota , †  April 5, 1970 ) was an American politician . Between 1951 and 1953 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Dakota.

Career

Ray Schnell grew up on his parents' farm. After the death of his father in 1915, he continued to run the farm. From 1924 he also worked as an auctioneer. In 1925 he moved to the Dickinson area , where he worked both as a farmer and as a rancher. Over the years he acquired several farms and ranches which his sons took over. He became a member of several rancher and auctioneer associations.

Politically, Schnell joined the Republican Party . Between 1939 and 1964 he sat several times as a member of the House of Representatives from North Dakota . In 1950 he was elected lieutenant governor of his state alongside Norman Brunsdale . He held this office between 1951 and 1953. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . Then this office fell back to Clarence P. Dahl , who had also been Schnell's predecessor. After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor Ray Schnell did not appear politically. He died of cancer on April 5, 1970.
