Francis Clyde Duffy
Francis Clyde Duffy (born March 20, 1890 in Devils Lake , Ramsey County , North Dakota , † December 17, 1977 in Santa Clara , California ) was an American politician . Between 1957 and 1959 he was lieutenant governor of the state of North Dakota.
Career
Francis Duffy graduated from Devils Lake High School . After completing a law degree at the University of North Dakota and being admitted to the bar, he began working for a law firm in this profession. Before that he had edited the Grand Forks Herald for some time . Between 1925 and 1930 he was a special prosecutor for his state. He was tasked with investigating some irregularities in various government institutions. From 1939 to 1944, as Code Commissioner, he was also jointly responsible for revising the legislation. He also served as the legal representative for his hometown of Devils Lake for many years. Later he was a director of Otter Tail Power Company , Ramsey National Bank and Northern National Insurance Company, among others . He was president of the North Dakota Bar Association and a member of the Devils Lake Chamber of Commerce.
Politically, Duffy joined the Republican Party . There he was meanwhile district chairman and member of the state board. In June 1936 he attended the Republican National Convention in Cleveland as a delegate . Between 1948 and 1956 he was a member of the North Dakota Senate , where he led the Republican faction from 1953 to 1955. In 1956 he was elected lieutenant governor of North Dakota alongside John E. Davis . He held this office between 1957 and 1959. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. In 1958 he ran unsuccessfully in his party's primary election for the US Senate . Francis Duffy died on December 19, 1977 in Santa Clara and was buried in Devils Lake.
