Casselton is located in southeast North Dakota. The Red River of the North , which forms the border with Minnesota , flows a few kilometers east of Casselton . Fargo city center is 22 miles to the east. Other neighboring towns of Casselton are Amenia (13 km north), Mapleton (14.4 km east), Leonard (29.3 km south) and Wheatland (11 km west).

Interstate 94 runs along the southern outskirts in a west-east direction . The North Dakota Highway 18 runs north-south direction as the main road through the city of Casselton. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
A railway line of the BNSF Railway runs through Casselton in a west-east direction . Amtrak passenger trains , which have a station in nearby Fargo , also use this route . A branch line branches off from the BNSF route, which is operated by the Red River Valley and Western Railroad (RRVW). The RRVW is a regional railway company that operates freight traffic on lines leased from the BNSF Railway .

Railway accident at the end of 2013
On the afternoon of December 30, 2013, west of Casselton, wagons of a BNSF Railway freight train derailed . A train on the neighboring track, which was transporting tank cars with crude oil in the opposite direction, drove into the derailed wagons. A big fire started. Some exploded.
The accident brings back memories of the Lac-Mégantic railway accident (July 6, 2013, Canada).
The train tracks run through the town of Casselton. North Dakota is the second most oil producing state (after Texas). The North Dakota oil regulator said shortly before the accident that around 60 percent of the oil produced was transported by rail; this rate will increase to around 90 percent in 2014.
