Chestnut - Der Held vom Central Park (Original title: Chestnut: Hero of Central Park ) is an American children's film from 2004 with Makenzie Vega and Abigail Breslin in the leading roles.

The siblings Sal and Ray grow up in a Catholic orphanage in New York City . One day they find a puppy they call Chestnut and keep hidden in the orphanage. When Sal and Ray from the childless couple Laura and Matt adopted , they will take the young Great Dane with secretly. Since Matt is allergic and dogs are not allowed in the shared apartment complex not far from Central Park , the girls keep their dog hidden while it grows and break-ins increase in the residential area. The fully grown chestnut can no longer be hidden, so that first the housekeeper Rosa and ultimately Matt and Laura learn about the animal, but they love it and would like to keep it. The hard-hearted landlord Trundle forbids keeping a dog and gives the Tomleys the alternative of getting rid of the dog or moving out. Desperate, Sal flees to Central Park with Chestnut, where she is ultimately found and leaves the dog behind. Left to his own devices, Chestnut encounters the intruders who are just breaking into Trundle's apartment. Chestnut follows the criminals, puts them in Trundle's apartment and warns the sleeping Trundle. Chestnut is seriously injured while fighting the burglars. Trundle realizes that he was saved by Chestnut and allows pets in his apartments. Chestnut recovers from his stab wound, and Sal and Ray donate Trundle's reward for capturing the burglars to the orphanage.

The film premiered on October 21, 2004 in the United States at the Heartland Film Festival and screened in Canadian cinemas from May 2006. In large parts of Europe the film was released directly on DVD, in Germany as a TV premiere on November 17, 2007.
