Mark Andrews (politician)

Mark Andrews (* 19th May 1926 in Cass County , North Dakota ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He represented the state of North Dakota in both houses of Congress .

Life

Andrews served in the US Army from 1944 to 1946 and was a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point until he was dismissed in 1946. He then studied at North Dakota State University in Fargo , where he graduated in 1949. Andrews first became a farmer. He got into politics by working in farmers' associations.

From 1958 to 1962 he was a member of the Republican National Committee and was elected to the 88th Congress on October 22, 1963 in a special election to fill the vacant seat of the late Hjalmar Carl Nygaard . Andrews was a member of the US House of Representatives from October 22, 1963 to January 3, 1981 . In 1980 he no longer stood for election to the House of Representatives, but for the Senate election. From January 3, 1981 to January 3, 1987 as a Senator, he did not succeed in 1986 to be re-elected to the US Senate . With 0.73 percentage points difference he was defeated by the Democrat Kent Conrad .

Andrews founded a consulting firm in Washington and served on the board of directors of automotive supplier Tenneco . He now lives in Mapleton , North Dakota.
