Martin N. Johnson

Martin Nelson Johnson (born March 3, 1850 in Racine County , Wisconsin , †  October 21, 1909 in Fargo , North Dakota ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). He represented the state of North Dakota in both houses of Congress .

In the year of his birth, Martin Johnson's parents moved with him to Iowa , where the family settled in Decorah . He attended the village school, but was also taught at home. He later began law studies at the University of Iowa , graduating in 1873. After two years as a teacher at the Military Academy in Oakland returned to Iowa in 1875 Johnson back, was admitted to the bar in there the following year and began practicing as a lawyer in Decorah.

In Iowa he also made his first political experience as a member of the House of Representatives in 1877 and as State Senator from 1878 to 1882. In 1876 he was a member of the Republican Electoral College , which Rutherford B. Hayes elected US President . In 1882 Johnson moved to the Dakota Territory and worked there in agriculture. From 1886 to 1890 he was a prosecutor in Nelson County ; In 1889 he was a member of the Constitutional Convention for North Dakota. In the same year he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate .

For this he was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1890 , where he represented his state from March 4, 1891 to March 3, 1899. In 1898 he declined to run again because he was again running for a seat in the Senate, but he failed again. It was not until ten years later that he was elected to the Senate on the third attempt, where he took up his mandate from March 4, 1909; however, Martin Johnson died in Fargo in October of the same year. He was buried in Petersburg .
