Richard Alan "Rick" Berg (born August 16, 1959 in Maddock , Benson County , North Dakota ) is an American Republican Party politician who represented the state of North Dakota in the US House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013 . In the 2012 election to the US Senate , he succeeded the outgoing Kent Conrad , but was narrowly defeated by the Democratic competitor Heidi Heitkamp .

Life

After attending high school in Hettinger , Berg first studied from 1977 to 1978 at the North Dakota State School of Science and then agricultural sciences at North Dakota State University (NDSU), which he graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science ( BS Agricultural Economics ) . Then he worked as an entrepreneur .

He also began a political career in the Republican Party and was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives for the first time in 1985 , where he represented the 45th constituency of the state until 2011 . During this time he was briefly speaker in 1993 and most recently from 2003 to 2009 as Majority Leader leader of the Republican majority parliamentary group in the North Dakota Parliament. In addition to this political activity, he continued his professional career as a real estate agent and financial advisor ; initially between 1991 and 2005 as Broker and Vice President of Goldmark Commercial Corporation , before he was most recently Executive Vice President of Goldmark Schlossman Commercial Real Estate Services from 2005 to 2010 .

In the November 2, 2010 election , the conservative Republican Berg, who opposes abortion , gay rights and gun rights , was elected the only member of the US House of Representatives for North Dakota . During his election campaign , Berg, who beat out longtime Democratic incumbent Earl Pomeroy in the election , called for income tax cuts, inheritance tax abolition , an end to tax-funded bailouts for troubled businesses and an end to uncontrolled spending.

In addition to his political work, Berg is involved in numerous social and economic organizations and was not only President of the FarmHouse International Fraternity , but also a member of the 4-H Club , the American Red Cross , the Fargo Chamber of Commerce , and Future Farmers of America, founded in 1928 as well as United Way .

Berg did not apply for re-election in November 2012, but ran for election to the US Senate to succeed the no longer-running Democratic incumbent Kent Conrad . He won the internal party code ( Primary ) against Duane Sand with 66 to 34 percent of the vote, and met with the Senate election in 2012 to Democrat Heidi Heitkamp , the 1993-2000 Attorney General was of North Dakota. Heitkamp surprisingly prevailed by a narrow margin.

In 2018, Berg was elected chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party to succeed Kelly Armstrong .
