Olger Burton Burtness (born March 14, 1884 in Mekinock , Grand Forks County , North Dakota , †  January 20, 1960 in Grand Forks , North Dakota) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1933 he represented the first constituency of the state of North Dakota in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

Olger Burtness attended the public schools in his home country and then the University of North Dakota , where he studied law until 1907. After his admission to the bar, he practiced this profession in Grand Forks. Burtness became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1911 and 1916 he was a prosecutor in Grand Forks County. In 1916, 1936 and 1948 he was a delegate at the respective Republican National Conventions . Between 1919 and 1920 he was an MP in the North Dakota House of Representatives .

Congressman

In the 1920 congressional election, Burtness was elected to succeed John Miller Baer in the US House of Representatives. After several re-elections, he was able to complete a total of six legislative terms there between March 4, 1921 and March 3, 1933. For the elections in 1932 he was no longer nominated by his party; therefore he had to leave Congress in March 1933 .

Another résumé

After his time in Washington , Burtness returned to practice as a lawyer. He was also an attorney for the City of Grand Forks in 1936 and 1937. From 1950 until his death in 1960, he served as a judge in the North Dakota First Jurisdiction.
