Henry Thomas Helgesen

Henry Thomas Helgesen (born June 26, 1857 in Decorah , Winneshiek County , Iowa , † April 10, 1917 in Washington DC ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1913 he represented the second and between 1913 and 1917 the first constituency of the state of North Dakota in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

Henry Helgesen attended his home public schools and the John Breckenridge Normal Institute and the JR Slack Business College in Decorah. In 1887 he moved to Milton , Dakota Territory . There he worked in trade, the wood industry and agriculture. Helgesen became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1889 and 1892 he was the North Dakota State Commissioner for Agriculture and Labor. From 1893 to 1896 he was on the school board of the city of Milton, whose chairman he was meanwhile. From 1897 to 1901 and between 1907 and 1913, Henry Helgesen was a member of the board of directors of the University of North Dakota .

Helgesen in Congress

In 1908 a first candidacy for Congress failed . In 1910, Helgesen was elected to the US House of Representatives for North Dakota Second Constituency. There he completed a legislative period between March 4, 1911 and March 3, 1913. In 1912, 1914 and 1916 he was elected as a member of Congress for the first constituency of his state. He exercised this mandate between March 4, 1913 and his death on April 10, 1917. He was buried in Decorah.
