Hjalmar Carl Nygaard (born March 24, 1906 in Sharon , Steele County , North Dakota , † July 18, 1963 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1963 he represented the second constituency of the state of North Dakota in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

Hjalmar Nygaard attended his homeland public schools, Maryville State Teacher College and the University of North Dakota . Between 1932 and 1935 he worked as a teacher in his home country. From 1936 to 1944 he worked in Sharon in the grocery store. Then he was engaged in the hardware trade in Enderlin until 1960 .

Political career

Nygaard was a member of the Republican Party . In Sharon he was mayor and a member of the school board. Between 1949 and 1960 he was an MP in the North Dakota House of Representatives . In 1959 he was President of the House and served intermittently as the Republican parliamentary group leader. In the 1960 congressional elections, Nygaard was elected to the US House of Representatives for the second constituency of his home state. There he replaced Quentin N. Burdick on January 3, 1961 . In the 1962 elections he swapped constituencies with Don L. Short : Nygaard was elected to Congress in the first constituency, a mandate that Short previously held. This became the successor of Nygaard in the second constituency. Hjalmar Nygaard was unable to exercise his new mandate for very long: he died in July 1963. In Congress he was a member of the National Monument Commission .
