The county is located in northeast North Dakota on the west bank of the Red River of the North , which forms the border with Minnesota . It has an area of 3729 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. The Grand Forks County was formed in 1873. It was named after the city of Grand Forks, which was named after its location at the confluence of the Red Lake River and the Red River of the North .
