Adams County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Hettinger .

The county is located in the southwest of North Dakota, borders South Dakota to the south and has an area of ​​2561 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Hettinger County , Grant County , Sioux County , Perkins County, South Dakota, Harding County, South Dakota, Bowman County, and Slope County .

history

Adams County was formed on April 17, 1907 from parts of Hettinger County. It was named after John Quincy Adams , a US railroad official and pioneer who built the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad through North Dakota.

Three of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 18, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Adams County had 2,593 people in 1,121 households and 725 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.50 percent white, 0.54 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.35 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,079 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,306. Males had a median income of $ 23,073 versus $ 18,714 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,425. 8.5 percent of families and 10.4 percent families lived below the poverty line.
