The county is located in the north of North Dakota, borders Canada and has an area of ​​4,397 square kilometers, of which 76 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in the United States in a clockwise direction: Rolette County , Pierce County , McHenry County, and Renville County .

history

Bottineau County was formed as the original Free Territory county on January 4, 1873. It was named after Pierre Bottineau , an early border guard and pioneer in the area.

Four buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 20, 2018).
