Mountrail County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Stanley .

The county is located in the central northwest of North Dakota and has an area of ​​5027 square kilometers, of which 303 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Burke County , Ward County , McLean County , Dunn County , McKenzie County, and Williams County .

history

Mountrail County was formed on January 4, 1873. It was named after Joseph Mountraille , a prominent French-Canadian fur trader and courier at the time who toured the Dakota Territory . On November 30, 1892, the county was dissolved and re-created on January 25, 1909

According to the 2000 census , there were 6,631 people in 2,560 households and 1,753 families in Mountrail County. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.99 percent white, 0.09 percent African American, 29.98 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.42 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.31 percent of the population.

Of the 2,560 households, 31.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.8 percent were married couples living together, 11.8 percent were single mothers, 31.5 percent were non-families, 28.5 percent were single households and 14.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.1 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,098 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,864. Males had a median income of $ 24,750 versus $ 20,844 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,422. 14.0 percent of families and 19.3 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 23.4 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
