Nelson County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Lakota . The county is sparsely populated and predominantly agricultural.
geography
The county is located in the northeast of North Dakota and has an area of 2613 square kilometers, of which 70 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Walsh County , Grand Forks County , Steele County , Griggs County , Eddy County , Benson County, and Ramsey County .
The county is located in the Drift Prairie , a landscape characterized by lush moraines and shallow lakes. In the southwest the Sheyenne River flows through the county.
history
Nelson County was formed on March 2, 1883 and finally organized on June 9 of the same year. It was named after Nelson E. Nelson , an early settler and politician of the Dakota Territory . In 1883 he was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Territory.
Three buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 29, 2018).

Nelson County is dependent on agriculture . Mainly wheat and soy are grown, but there is also livestock farming .
The major highways in the county are US Highway 2 , North Dakota Highway 1 , North Dakota Highway 15 , North Dakota Highway 32, and Nelson County Road 35.
