Lakota is a city in Nelson County in North Dakota and the seat of the county seat . Lakota was founded in 1883, the name of the city refers to the Lakota . At the turn of the century, Lakota developed into a center in the agricultural region, mainly due to the railroad. In 2010, 672 people lived in the city.

Like the rest of North Dakota, Lakota has a continental climate . Lakota's lowest average temperature is −18 degrees Celsius, while the highest average temperature is 26 degrees Celsius.
Lakota is located 63 miles west of Grand Forks and 27 miles east of Devils Lake .
history
Lakota's history is closely tied to the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway , which reached where it is today in 1882. Lakota was founded on July 27, 1883. The railway company recruited immigrants to settle in the towns and homestead farms along the route, where they would then rely on the railway.
With the railway station and as the administrative seat of the county, Lakota developed into a regional center at the beginning of the 20th century. The companies that settled in the city primarily served the needs of the rural population. In April 1900 alone, three to four new families are said to have arrived in Lakota every day. The newcomers came mainly from the eastern regions of the USA and Canada , but also from Scandinavia and Germany. In 1901 there were two banks and newspapers, a school and five granaries in the city . In 1901/02 the Dakota and Northern Railway Corporation built a branch line from Lakota to Edmore , later it was extended to Sarles . In 1907 it was taken over by the railway company, now renamed Great Northern Railway . In Lakota there was a small depot for the locomotives of the branch line.
In 1924, today's US Highway 2 was built through Lakota. As part of the New Deal's public construction program , the highway, which was previously only gravel, was paved. In addition, the first airport was built in Lakota in 1934 .

The Lakota City Council consists of six members and Brad Hooey is Mayor (as of 2020).
Infrastructure
Public facilities
Lakota has a public outdoor pool , city park , community center, public library , elementary school, and high school . Then there are the county's facilities. The building of the library ( Tofthagen Library Museum from 1927) and a church in the village are listed .
traffic
US Highway 2 runs east-west on the southern edge of Lakota . It crosses North Dakota Highway 1 to the east of the city.
The station of the Burlington Northern Railroad is only used by freight traffic .
Lakota Municipal Airport is located in the southeast of the city .
