The main line of the former BN begins in Chicago and runs in a north-westerly direction via La Crosse (Wisconsin) and Minneapolis - St. Paul to Grand Forks . From here it continues westward through the states of North Dakota , Montana and Idaho to Spokane (Washington) , where the Marias Pass is crossed in Montana . In Spokane, the route divides into a branch to Portland (Oregon) and one to Seattle and Vancouver . To the south, the route extends from Billings (Montana) via Denver , Amarillo , Fort Worth / Dallas to Houston / Galveston . Further north-south routes lead from Chicago to Kansas City , Oklahoma City , Memphis (Tennessee) as well as to Birmingham (Alabama) and Mobile . Then there is the west-east route Denver - Lincoln (Nebraska) - Chicago.

history

GE U25C # 5603 in Denver , 1978

Burlington Northern Inc. was formed on March 2, 1970 through the merger of the Great Northern Railway , Northern Pacific Railway , Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway . This merger was based on initial attempts made by James J. Hill around 1901. The Great Northern and Northern Pacific headquarters were in the same building in St. Paul. The companies each use different sides of the 180 East 5th Street building.

In 1980 Burlington Northern bought the St. Louis - San Francisco Railway . In 1980/1981, Burlington Northern Inc. was renamed Burlington Northern Railroad as part of a corporate reorganization. At the same time, the newly created parent company Burlington Northern Holdings became Burlington Northern Inc. A year later, the parent company Burlington Northern Inc. moved to Seattle and in 1988 to Fort Worth, Texas . In 1981 the Colorado and Southern Railway was integrated and in 1983 the Fort Worth and Denver Railway . In the period that followed, the company rationalized its route network by shutting down or selling uneconomical or double routes. For example, the former Northern Pacific main line between Huntley, Montana and Sandpoint , Idaho was sold to the Montana Rail Link . With the development of the coal deposits in the Powder River Basin , the company rose to become one of the most important transport companies for coal. In 1995, the Burlington Northern merged with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe to form the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway , forming the largest railway company in the United States, measured by route kilometers.
