The Powder River Basin is a region in Wyoming and Montana . Approximately 40% of the United States' coal is extracted from this region. The larger towns include Gillette , Sheridan and Miles City .

There are around 800 billion tons of fatty coal in the soil under this basin . There are natural coal fires in the region .
