The Dickey County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . The county seat is Ellendale .

The county is located in the southeast of North Dakota, borders South Dakota to the south and has an area of 2957 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: LaMoure County , Ransom County , Sargent County , Brown County, South Dakota, McPherson County, South Dakota, and McIntosh County .
history
Dickey County was formed on March 5, 1881, and finally organized on August 18, 1882. It was named after George H. Dickey , an early politician and lawmaker in the Dakota Territory.

According to the 2000 census , Dickey County had 5,757 people in 2,283 households and 1,499 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.78 percent white, 0.10 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.50 percent Asian and 0.56 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.35 percent of the population.
Of the 2,283 households, 27.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.0 percent were married couples living together, 4.9 percent were single mothers, 34.3 percent were non-families, 32.0 percent were single households and 17.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 10.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 21.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,231 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,682. Males had a median income of $ 26,914 versus $ 15,668 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,846. 11.6 percent of families and 14.8 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 20.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
