The Hettinger County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . In 2000 , the county had 2,715 residents with a population density of 0.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Mott .

The county is located in southwest North Dakota, about 45 km to the south from the South Dakota border and has an area of ​​2,936 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Stark County , Grant County , Adams County, and Slope County .

history

Hettinger County was formed on March 9, 1883. It was named after Mathias Hettinger, (born German) a banker and brewer from Illinois who was the father-in-law of the member of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly , Erastus A. Williams . On April 19, 1907, the county's organization was completed.

Five buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 26, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , there were 2,715 people in Hettinger County. 65 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,152 households and 778 families.
