The Hettinger County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . In 2000 , the county had 2,715 residents with a population density of 0.9 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Mott .

The county is located in southwest North Dakota, about 45 km to the south from the South Dakota border and has an area of 2,936 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Stark County , Grant County , Adams County, and Slope County .

history

Hettinger County was formed on March 9, 1883. It was named after Mathias Hettinger, (born German) a banker and brewer from Illinois who was the father-in-law of the member of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly , Erastus A. Williams . On April 19, 1907, the county's organization was completed.

Five buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 26, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , there were 2,715 people in Hettinger County. 65 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,152 households and 778 families. The population density was 0.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.93 percent white, 0.15 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.04 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.37 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.22 percent of the population.

Of the 1,152 households, 26.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.2 percent were married couples living together, 3.8 percent were single mothers, 32.4 percent were non-families, 31.2 percent were single households, and 18.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.89 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 3.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 20.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 25.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 100.1 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,209 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,668. Males had a median income of $ 23,201 versus $ 16,917 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,555. 12.1 percent of families and 14.8 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 21.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
