Williams County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Williston .

The county is located almost in the far northwest of North Dakota, borders Montana in the west , is about 45 km from the border with Canada in the north and has an area of ​​5563 square kilometers, of which 201 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Divide County , Burke County , Mountrail County , McKenzie County , Roosevelt County, Montana, and Sheridan County, Montana.

Williams County was formed on November 30, 1892. It was named after Erastus Appelman Williams , an early politician and member of the Dakota Territory Legislature .

As of the 2000 census , Williams County had 19,761 people in 8,095 households and 5,261 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.95 percent white, 0.12 percent African American, 4.40 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.21 percent were descended from two or more races. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.6 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,491 , and the median income for a family was $ 39,065. Males had a median income of $ 29,884 versus $ 19,329 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,763. 9.6 percent of families and 11.9 percent families lived below the poverty line.
