Wells County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Fessenden .

The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of North Dakota and has an area of ​​3,343 square kilometers, of which 50 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Benson County , Eddy County , Foster County , Stutsman County , Kidder County , Sheridan County, and Pierce Counties .

history

Wells County was formed in 1873. It was named after Edward Payson Wells , an early politician and member of the Dakota Territory Legislature.

The Vang Lutheran Church is one of five entries of the county in the National Register of Historic Places .

Five buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 5, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Wells County had 5,102 people in 2,215 households and 1,453 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.12 percent white, 0.14 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian and 0.02 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.25 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.29 percent of the population.

Of the 2,215 households, 25.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.6 percent were married couples living together, 4.8 percent were single mothers, 34.4 percent were non-families, 32.6 percent were single households, and 18.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.85.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 4.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 26.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 96.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.0 men.
