The Burleigh County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . The county seat is Bismarck .
geography
The county is located just south of the geographic center of North Dakota and has an area of 4,320 square kilometers, of which 91 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Sheridan County , Kidder County , Emmons County , Morton County , Oliver County, and McLean Counties .
history
Burleigh County was formed in 1873. It was named after Walter A. Burleigh , a politician and delegate of the Dakota Territory in the 39th and 40th US Congresses.
The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Menoken Indian Village Site . 25 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 20, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Burleigh County had 69,416 people in 27,670 households and 18,206 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.03 percent white, 0.26 percent African American, 3.28 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.67 percent of the population.
Of the 27,670 households, 32.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers, 34.2 percent were non-families, 28.1 percent were single households and 9.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 11.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,309 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,085. Males had a median income of $ 34,753 versus $ 22,473 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,436. 5.3 percent of families and 7.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. 8.8 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
