The Mercer County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . The county seat is Stanton .

The county is located west of the geographic center of North Dakota and has an area of ​​2,881 square kilometers, of which 173 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by McLean County , Oliver County , Morton County , Stark County, and Dunn County .

history

Mercer County was formed on January 14, 1875. It was named after William Henry Harrison Mercer , one of the first settlers in the area.

There is a National Historic Site in the county , the Knife River Indian Villages . On this site is the Big Hidatsa Village Site , which has the status of a National Historic Landmark . Eight structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 18, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Mercer County had 8,644 people in 3,346 households and 2,445 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer.
