Rolette County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Rolla .

The county is located in northern North Dakota, bordering Canada and has an area of ​​2,433 square kilometers, of which 96 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in the United States in a clockwise direction: Towner County , Pierce County, and Bottineau Counties .

history

Rolette County was formed in 1873. It was named after Joseph Rolette, Jr. , an early political leader in the area. The county is home to many indigenous people, mostly members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation .

As of the 2000 census , Rolette County had 13,674 people in 4,556 households and 3,366 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 25.12 percent white, 0.07 percent African American, 73.01 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.61 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80 percent of the population.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 36.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 18.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.7 percent were 65 years of age or over.
