Emmons County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Linton .

The county is located in southern North Dakota, bordering South Dakota and has an area of 4027 square kilometers, of which 116 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Burleigh County , Kidder County , Logan County , McIntosh County , Campbell County, South Dakota, Sioux County, and Morton County .

history

Emmons County was formed on February 10, 1879 and finally organized on November 9, 1883. It was named after James Emmons , an early businessman from this area in Bismarck .

According to the 2000 census , Emmons County had 4,331 people in 1,786 households and 1,241 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 99.05 percent white, 0.05 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.18 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.30 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.12 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,786 households, 27.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.0 percent were married couples living together, 4.4 percent were single mothers, 30.5 percent were non-families, 28.4 percent were single households, and 16.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.92 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 3.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 25.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 101.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 100.9 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,119 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,857. Males had a median income of $ 23,235 versus $ 15,590 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,604. 14.7 percent of families and 20.1 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 23.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 24.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
