Barnes County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Valley City .

The county is located in the central southeast of North Dakota and has an area of 3919 square kilometers, of which 56 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Griggs County , Steele County , Cass County , Ransom County , LaMoure County, and Stutsman Counties .
history
Barnes County was formed as Burbank County on January 4, 1873. On January 14, 1875, it was renamed Barnes County. It was named after Alanson H. Barnes , an early judge in the Dakota Territory. The organization of the county took place on January 6, 1879.

According to the 2000 census , Barnes County had 11,775 people in 4,884 households and 3,115 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.91 percent white, 0.45 percent African American, 0.76 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.54 percent of the population.
Of the 4,884 households, 27.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.9 percent were married couples living together, 6.8 percent were single mothers, 36.2 percent were non-families, 31.5 percent were single households and 15.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 11.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 19.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,166 , and the median income for a family was $ 42,149. Males had a median income of $ 28,504 versus $ 18,447 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,566. 6.4 percent of families and 10.8 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 10.9 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 10.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
