Barnes County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Valley City .

The county is located in the central southeast of North Dakota and has an area of ​​3919 square kilometers, of which 56 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Griggs County , Steele County , Cass County , Ransom County , LaMoure County, and Stutsman Counties .

history

Barnes County was formed as Burbank County on January 4, 1873. On January 14, 1875, it was renamed Barnes County. It was named after Alanson H. Barnes , an early judge in the Dakota Territory. The organization of the county took place on January 6, 1879.

According to the 2000 census , Barnes County had 11,775 people in 4,884 households and 3,115 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.91 percent white, 0.45 percent African American, 0.76 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races.
