The Morton County is a county in the state of North Dakota of the United States . The county seat is Mandan .

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of North Dakota and has an area of ​​5038 square kilometers, of which 49 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Oliver County , Burleigh County , Emmons County , Sioux County , Grant County , Stark County, and Mercer County .

The 290 kilometers long Heart River flows into the Missouri River at Mandan .

history

Morton County was formed on January 8, 1873. It was named after Oliver Hazard Perry Throck Morton , a governor of Indiana .

The Lewis and Clark Hotel is one of ten entries for the county on the National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2000 census , Morton County had 25,303 people in 9,889 households and 6,932 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.82 percent white, 0.16 percent African American, 2.39 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races.
