Williams County is a county in the state of North Dakota in the United States . The county seat is Williston .

The county is located almost in the far northwest of North Dakota, borders Montana in the west , is about 45 km from the border with Canada in the north and has an area of ​​5563 square kilometers, of which 201 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Divide County , Burke County , Mountrail County , McKenzie County , Roosevelt County, Montana, and Sheridan County, Montana.

history

Williams County was formed on November 30, 1892. It was named after Erastus Appelman Williams , an early politician and member of the Dakota Territory Legislature .

In the county is a National Historic Site , the Fort Union Trading Post , which also has the status of a National Historic Landmark . Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 18, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Williams County had 19,761 people in 8,095 households and 5,261 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.95 percent white, 0.12 percent African American, 4.40 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.21 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.94 percent of the population.

Of the 8,095 households, 31.2 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.3 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers, 35.0 percent were non-families, 30.9 percent were single households and 13.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.99 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.6 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,491 , and the median income for a family was $ 39,065. Males had a median income of $ 29,884 versus $ 19,329 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,763. 9.6 percent of families and 11.9 percent families lived below the poverty line. Of these, 16.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
