economy

Originally, Williston was an agricultural region. However, when the geologically significant Bakken Formation was found to be under the city, which extends widely into Canada, a tremendous boom in industry began. The rock contains oil and gas and can be processed using the hydraulic fracturing process (fracking). If the global demand for oil persists or increases and the extraction of oil from rock becomes economically viable, a further expansion of the production facilities can be expected and the population in Williston to over 30,000 people can be expected within a very short time.

Demographics

The 2010 US census recorded a population of 14,718, an increase of 18.5% over the year 2000. For 2011, the US Census Bureau estimates the population at 16,006. The average age of the residents in 2010 was 35.5 years, well below the average for North Dakota, which was 44.8 years.

The main groups of immigrants during the city's early days came from Norway ( 47.8%) , Germany (31.6%) and Ireland ( 9.6%) .
