Darlene Kay Olson Hooley (born April 4, 1939 in Williston , Williams County , North Dakota ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 2009 she represented the fifth constituency of the state of Oregon in the US House of Representatives .

Career

At the age of eight, Darlene Olson, her maiden name, came with her parents to Salem , Oregon, where she attended the Salem Academy . She then moved to Pasadena Nazarene College in California . On her return she studied at the University of Oregon until 1961 . Between 1961 and 1975 she worked as a teacher. In 1965 she married the teacher John Hooley, with whom she would have two children; the marriage was divorced in 1997.

Hooley became a member of the Democratic Party . She was a member of the West Linn City Council from 1977 to 1980 and a member of the Oregon House of Representatives from 1980 to 1986 . After that she was a member of the county council in Clackamas County between 1986 and 1996 .

In 1996 Darlene Hooley was elected to the US House of Representatives. There she took over from Jim Bunn on January 3, 1997 , whom she had defeated in the elections. After several re-elections, she was able to exercise her mandate in Congress until January 3, 2009. Their election results were between 51% and 57% of the vote. In 2002 she spoke out against the Iraq war . She was a member of the Science and Technology Committee, the Budget Committee, and the Energy and Trade Committee. In 2008 she decided not to run again. Today Darlene Hooley lives in West Linn.
