Harris Ellsworth
Mathew Harris Ellsworth (born September 17, 1899 in Hoquiam , Washington , † February 7, 1986 in Albuquerque , New Mexico ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1947 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Oregon in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Harris Ellsworth came to Eugene , Oregon with his parents as a child . The family later moved to neighboring Wendling . Ellsworth attended public schools in his new home. During the First World War he was in a training unit of the US Army . He then studied journalism at the University of Oregon until 1922 .
Subsequently he worked in the newspaper and wood processing industries. Between 1926 and 1928 he also published a trade journal for the wood industry. In 1928 and 1929 he himself lectured on journalism at the University of Oregon. Since 1929 he was also editor and co-owner of the newspaper "Roseburg New-Review". In 1936 he was involved in founding the radio station KRNR, one of the first radio stations in Oregon.
Ellsworth became a member of the Republican Party . In 1941 he was elected to the Oregon Senate, before moving into the US House of Representatives after the 1942 congressional election for the newly created fourth constituency of Oregon. After he was confirmed in each of the following years, he was able to exercise his mandate between January 3, 1943 and January 3, 1957 in seven legislative periods. He was intermittently a member of the Budget Committee and the House Rules Committee . In 1956, his candidacy narrowly failed. He was defeated by the Democrat Charles O. Porter .
After retiring from Congress , Ellsworth was named chairman of the Civil Service Commission by President Dwight D. Eisenhower . He held this office between 1957 and 1959. Then he worked again in the newspaper business. He was also involved in the real estate business. He retired in the 1970s, which he spent in Albuquerque. He died there in 1986.
