Jón Gunnarsson

Jón Gunnarsson (born September 21, 1956 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic politician of the Independence Party . From January to November 2017 he was Minister for Transport and Local Authorities in the Icelandic Ministry of the Interior .

He has worked as a farmer and in advertising and distribution for Icelandic media; from 1994 to 2004 he ran an import company with his wife. From 2005 to 2007 Jón Gunnarsson was managing director of the Icelandic rescue organization ICE-SAR ( Slysavarnafélagið Landsbjörg ).

Jón Gunnarsson has been a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing for the Southwest constituency since 2007 . He was a member of various parliamentary committees and was, among other things, chairman of the Icelandic delegation to the Conference of Parliamentarians of the Arctic Region. As of early 2017, he was a member of the Committee on Justice and Education. Since January 11, 2017, Jón Gunnarsson was Minister for Transport and Local Authorities in the Bjarni Benediktsson cabinet (2017) , which consisted of members of the Independence Party and the Viðreisn and Björt framtíð parties . He and Justice Minister Sigríður Á. Andersen succeeded Interior Minister Ólöf Nordal , whose ministry was thus divided into two departments. His successor in the Katrín Jakobsdóttir cabinet is Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson .
