Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson ([ ˈsɪːɣʏrðʏr ˈiɲcɪ ˈjouːhansɔn ]; born April 20, 1962 in Selfoss ) is an Icelandic politician ( Progress Party ) and was Prime Minister of Iceland from April 2016 to January 2017. In October 2016 he was elected chairman of the Progress Party. Since November 30, 2017, he has been Minister of Transport and Local Authorities in the Katrín Jakobsdóttir cabinet .

Life

Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson is a veterinarian with a degree from the then Royal Veterinary and Agriculture University (KVL) in Copenhagen . From 1987 to 1994 he worked as a farmer in the municipality of Hrunamannahreppur , and from 1990 to 1995 as a veterinarian with his own practice. From 1996 to 2009 he was a veterinarian at the veterinary society Suðurland ( Dýralæknaþjónustu Suðurlands ) and from 1996 to 2011 with its chairman. From 2002 to 2009 he was head of the municipal council of Hrunamannahreppur.

Since 2009 he has been a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing for the southern constituency . From 2009 to 2013 he was vice-chairman of the Parliamentary Club of the Progress Party. He was also a member of the Committee on Fisheries and Agriculture and a member of the Icelandic delegation to the West Nordic Council . Since May 23, 2013 he was Minister for Fisheries and Agriculture in the cabinet of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson , at the same time he was also Minister of the Environment until December 31, 2014. His successor in the latter position is Sigrún Magnúsdóttir . Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson has been deputy chairman of the Progress Party since 2013.

Following the resignation of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson from the office of Prime Minister of Iceland on April 6, 2016, Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson was appointed as the new interim Prime Minister on the evening of the same day. He should take over the official business until the early elections in autumn.

On October 2, 2016, Sigurður Ingi was elected by the party assembly to succeed Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson as chairman of the Progress Party. With 370 votes he beat Sigmundur Davíð (329 votes), who stood for re-election, and Lilja Dögg Alfreðsdóttir , for whom only three votes were cast, but who was elected vice-chairman.

After the Progress Party's defeat in the parliamentary elections on October 29, 2016 and the associated loss of the governing majority for the coalition of the Independence and Progress Party, Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson has submitted his resignation as Prime Minister to the President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson . The latter asked him to remain in office until a new government was formed.
