Halldór Ásgrímsson
Halldór Ásgrímsson (born September 8, 1947 in Vopnafjörður , † May 18, 2015 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic politician. From 1994 to 2006 he was Chairman of the Progressive Party (Framsóknarflokkur) and from 2004 to 2006 Prime Minister of Iceland .
Life
He was a member of the Icelandic parliament Alþingi since 1974 . His ministerial offices included the office of Minister of Fisheries (1983-1991), the Office of Justice and Minister for Church Affairs (1988-1989), the Office of Minister for Nordic Cooperation (1985-1987 and 1995-1999) and, ultimately, the Office of Foreign Minister from 1995 to 2004.
On September 15, 2004 he took over his new office as the 15th Prime Minister since independence (June 17, 1944) from his predecessor Davíð Oddsson .
Halldór Ásgrímsson caused a stir with a public statement in February 2006 that Iceland would probably be a member of the European Union (EU) by 2015 . Whether Iceland will also introduce the euro , however, depends on the future attitude of Great Britain, Sweden and Denmark towards the common currency. However, the political conditions for Iceland to join the EU are not yet ripe.
On June 5, 2006, Halldór Ásgrímsson announced his resignation as party leader as well as prime minister. The reason given was the poor performance of his party in the national local elections in May 2006. On June 15, 2006, he handed over his post as Prime Minister to Geir Hilmar Haarde of the Independence Party and in 2007 he succeeded Per Unckel as Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, an organ of the Nordic Council .
