Benedikt Sigurðsson Grondal

Benedikt Sigurðsson Gröndal (born July 7, 1924 in Önundarfjörður, today Ísafjarðarbær municipality ; † July 20, 2010 ) was an Icelandic politician . He was from 1974 to 1980 chairman of the Social Democratic Party (Alþýðuflokkurinn) .

Benedikt Sigurðsson Gröndal was a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing from 1956 to 1982 . From October 15, 1979 to February 8, 1980 he was Prime Minister in the second minority government of the Social Democratic Party. He was previously foreign minister.

After the end of his political career, Benedikt was appointed Icelandic ambassador to Sweden and Finland. He was then sent to Australia, China, South Korea, Indonesia and Japan. He then served as the Icelandic UN ambassador for two years until 1991.
