Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson ([ ˈkvʏðløyɣʏr̥ ˈθouːr̥ ˈθourðarsɔn ]; German transcription Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson , born December 19, 1967 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic politician ( Independence Party ) and since January 2017 Iceland's Foreign Minister .

Life

The political scientist Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson ( BA from the University of Iceland in 1996) initially worked in the insurance industry. From 1998 to 2006 he was a member of Reykjavík City Council. In his party he was active as a member of the board of the Association of Young Members of the Independence Party (1987–1997, chairman since 1993) and as a board member (1991–1997) and member of the management (1993–1997) of the Independence Party.

Since 2003 Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson has been a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing , 2003-2009 for the constituency of Reykjavík-North , 2009-2016 for the constituency of Reykjavík-South and since the general election in Iceland in 2016 again for Reykjavík-North. 2016-2017 he was parliamentary group leader of the Independence Party in the Althing.

From May 24, 2007 to February 1, 2009, he was Icelandic Minister of Health. His successor was Ögmundur Jónasson from the Left-Green movement . Since January 11, 2017, he has succeeded Lilja Dögg Alfreðsdóttir as Foreign Minister in the Bjarni Benediktsson cabinet (2017) , which consisted of members of the Independence Party and the Viðreisn and Björt framtíð parties . He continues to hold this position in the Katrín Jakobsdóttir cabinet formed on November 30, 2017 , a coalition of the left-green movement, the independence party and the progress party .
