Ögmundur Jónasson (born July 17, 1948 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic politician ( left-green movement ) and was Iceland's Minister of the Interior from 2011 to 2013 .

Life

Ögmundur obtained his university entrance qualification (Stúdentspróf) in 1969 at Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík . Between 1971 and 1972 he worked as a teacher in a Reykjavík elementary school. He studied history and politics in Edinburgh ; In 1974 he made his master's degree . He stayed at Edinburgh University until 1978 . Ögmundur then worked until 1988 as a television and radio reporter at Ríkisútvarpið , Iceland's public broadcaster, between 1986 and 1988 in Copenhagen . He has also been teaching at the University of Iceland since 1979 and was chairman of the Bandalag starfsmanna ríkis og bæja (BSRB) union from 1988 to 2009 .

Ögmundur was a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing from 1995 to 2016 , initially in a joint parliamentary group of the People's Alliance and the non-party, then as a non-party and finally for the left-green movement. From 1998 to 1999 he was chairman of the non-party parliamentary group in the Althing, and from 1999 to 2009 of the left-green movement. On February 1, 2009, Ögmundur became Icelandic Minister of Health in the Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir I government . He replaced Gudlaugur Þór Þórðarson from the Independence Party . Following the Icelandic parliamentary elections in April 2009, Ögmundur became Minister of Health in the government of Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir II on May 10, 2009 . In 2010 he became Minister of Justice and Transport and since 2011 he has been Icelandic Minister of the Interior. In this position he was replaced after the parliamentary elections in Iceland in 2013 on May 23, 2013 by Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir , who was Interior Minister in the cabinet of Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson until November 2014 .

Ögmundur Jónasson had announced that he would no longer run for the general election in Iceland in 2016 . He was last on the list of the Left-Green movement for the Southwestern constituency .
