Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir

Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir (born October 12, 1966 in Hafnarfjörður ) is an Icelandic politician ( Independence Party ) and was Iceland's Minister of the Interior from May 23, 2013 to November 21, 2014 .

Hanna Birna received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Iceland in 1991 and a Master of Science in International and European Politics from the University of Edinburgh in 1993 .

From 2003 to 2013 she was a member of Reykjavík City Council . She was Mayor of Reykjavík from August 2008 to June 2010. In the 2013 general election in Iceland , she was elected to the Althing for the constituency of Reykjavík South . Since May 23, 2013, she has been Minister of the Interior in the Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson cabinet . She resigned from office on November 21, 2014 after coming under pressure due to an information leak in her ministry. An assistant had leaked confidential information about an asylum seeker to the media. The Ministry of Justice was separated from the Ministry of the Interior at the end of August. Since then the Prime Minister of Iceland, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson , has served as Minister of Justice . With the appointment of Ólöf Nordal as Hanna Birna's successor on December 4, 2014, the Ministry of Justice was reunited with the Ministry of the Interior.

From 2013 to 2015 she was deputy chairwoman of the Independence Party.

In June 2016, Hanna Birna announced that she would no longer stand for a seat in the Althing in the early elections in autumn and would withdraw from politics.
