Jón Gnarr (* 2. January 1967 in Reykjavik as Jón Gunnar Kristinsson ) is an Icelandic comedian , musician , writer and politician . From June 2010 to June 2014 he was mayor of his hometown.

Life

Jón Gnarr - the youngest legitimate son of a police officer (* 1917) and a worker (* 1922; † December 25, 2010) - left a Reykjavík school at the age of fourteen without a degree, which had no conventional class system and no grades. Since then he has been called Jón Gnarr. He then attended a boarding school for hard-to-educate young people for two years. After various odd jobs, he first worked as a carer in a home for the mentally and physically disabled. At the age of nineteen he wrote the novel Miðnætursólborgin ("The City of the Midnight Sun").

Jón is married to the masseuse Jóhanna Jóhannsdóttir (Jóga), daughter of a sailor. The couple have five children: the oldest child was born in 1985 and the youngest in 2005. In 2006 Jón Gnarr wrote a fictional autobiography called Indjáninn ("The Indian"), which he continued in 2012 with Sjóræninginn ("The Pirate").

Jón Gnarr began his career as a comedian in the early 1990s for the public broadcaster Ríkisútvarpið with the radio sitcom Hotel Volkswagen . He later worked for a private broadcaster for which he conducted morning “interviews” and appeared on radio, television and in feature films. In addition to the sketch show Fóstbræður (1997-2001), he was best known for his role as Georg Bjarnfreðarson in the three series Næturvaktin (2007), Dagvaktin (2008) and Fangavaktin (2009). According to the Munzinger archive, Jón Gnarr was the bassist for the punk rock band Nefrennsli ("runny noses") and has appeared in several films, sitcoms and talk shows. He also publishes prose and poetry.

In 2009 - during the Icelandic financial crisis - Jón Gnarr worked in an advertising agency as creative director . After parting with this agency, he focused his work on politics. In the local elections in Reykjavík on May 29, 2010, Jón's party Besti flokkurinn ("the best party") achieved the most votes with 34.7%. After the election victory, Jón took over the office of mayor on June 15, 2010 from the previous mayor Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir . Musicians, actors, cartoonists and other celebrities were candidates for the party. The election program included the following points:

  • Open instead of secret corruption.
  • Free towels for all swimming pools.
  • A polar bear for Reykjavík's Zoo .
  • A drug-free parliament by 2020.
  • Free bus tickets. (With the addition: "We can promise more than any other party because we will break every election promise.")

At the national level, Jón Gnarr is a member of the board of the Björt framtíð party , which was founded in 2012 and has close ties with Besti flokkurinn . In October 2013, Jón Gnarr announced that he would not seek a second term as Mayor of Reykjavík. His term of office ended on June 17, 2014. Jón's successor was his previous coalition partner Dagur B. Eggertsson from the Social Democratic Alliance (Samfylkingin). On the occasion of the handover, Dagur said that “the whole of society” had learned from Jón Gnarr.

During Jón Gnarr's tenure, the online platform Betri Reykjavík (Better Reykjavík) was established as a means of direct democracy .

Jón Gnarr converted from the Icelandic state church to the Catholic Church , but describes himself as an atheist and anarchist .
