Besti flokkurinn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Besti flokkurinn ( Eng. The Best Party ) was a political party in Reykjavík , the capital of Iceland .

history

The party was founded in 2009 as a political platform for comedian Jón Gnarr, who is popular in Iceland . It had no party program and was considered a fun party .

Besti flokkurinn competed in Reykjavík's 2010 municipal elections with unusual campaign promises such as "Free bath towels in every swimming pool" and "Polar bear in the zoo". In early March 2010, the list of candidates for local elections was presented. In addition to the top candidate Jón Gnarr, Dagur Kári Jónsson and Frosti Örn Gunnarsson, Jón Gnarr's two eldest sons, were also candidates in 14th and 15th place on the list. In a survey by the Icelandic daily Fréttablaðið , the party came to 12.9% at the end of March 2010. According to a Capacent Gallup poll from the end of April 2010, the party would have become Reykjavík's second largest party with 24%. The party's rapid rise is related to the general political mood in Iceland. Since the Icelandic banking crisis , many citizens no longer felt addressed by the established parties.

In April 2012 the party applied for membership as an observer with Pirate Parties International .

Together with Guðmundur Steingrímsson , a former member of the Progress Party , some members of Besti flokkurinn founded the Björt framtíð party in 2012 in order to be able to run in the 2013 parliamentary elections .

At the end of Jón Gnarr's term of office, the party was dissolved on June 16, 2014.

Election results

In the local elections in 2010, the party received 34.7% of the vote and moved into the local parliament as the strongest force with 6 out of 15 seats. Jón Gnarr became the new Lord Mayor of Reykjavík. According to the radio station RUV, Besti flokkurinn and the social democratic alliance agreed on a coalition. It was only the third strongest force with 19.1 percent. The Independence Party came in at 33.6 percent and had previously held the post of Lord Mayor almost always since Iceland's independence in 1944. The election victory was seen as a protest against those responsible for the consequences of the financial crisis.
